Front Travel Spring ZM-60/60A (ZP 01.603)

The spring ZP 01.603 is a power elastic element of the classic front travel suspension of the ZM-60/60A grain loaders. In the kinematic scheme of the contour-following mechanism, this part performs the function of the main power damper. Installed in pairs in the vertical slots of the outer yoke ZP 01.050 on special bolts ZP 01.602, the springs work in direct connection with the movable axle ZP 01.601 of the front wheel. Their engineering task is to work exclusively on compression, taking on and absorbing harsh shock impulses during the movement of the massive unit over uneven areas (across joints of concrete slabs, spilled grain, or small stones). Acting as a mechanical buffer between the wheel and the load-bearing structure, the spring effectively dampens the kinetic energy of impacts - this ensures constant contact of the wheel with the surface and reliably protects the load-bearing frame of the grain loader from destructive torsional deformations, as well as other assemblies during maneuvering on the threshing floor.

Design Features and Technical Specifications of the Spring ZP 01.603

  • Catalogue number: ZP 01.603
  • Material: Carbon steel spring wire P-3.5
  • Action type: Compression spring
  • Quantity per unit: 2 pcs. (installed symmetrically)
  • Country of manufacture: Ukraine

The spring ZP 01.603 has a classic cylindrical shape and is designed to operate under high static and dynamic loads. Since the front part of the grain loader's frame along with the feeders has a significant weight, a special carbon wire with a diameter of 3.5 mm is used to manufacture this part - such a cross-section combined with the properties of spring steel makes the product extremely rigid. In a state of rest, the spring is only partially compressed under the weight of the machine itself, leaving a sufficient margin of working travel (inter-turn space) for the instant absorption of sharp impacts during movement.

For the correct distribution of force, the end (support) turns of the spring are tightly closed, which ensures an even, strictly vertical position on the metal support plates ZP 01.403 and prevents the part from misaligning on the bolt ZP 01.602 even during extreme compression when running over a large obstacle.

Features of Diagnostics and Replacement of the Front Travel Springs ZM-60/60A

During prolonged operation, the main enemy of this part is metal fatigue. Under the constant static pressure of the massive frame and regular dynamic impacts, the spring gradually loses its original elasticity - sagging occurs, and an excessive decrease in the inter-turn space leads to the suspension losing its working travel and beginning to bottom out, transmitting all harsh impacts directly to the axle and yoke of the grain loader. Another serious problem is the aggressive environment. Since the mechanism is open and operates in conditions of high threshing floor dustiness and frequent humidity changes, the part suffers greatly from corrosion. Rust eventually thins and destroys the structure of the 3.5 mm carbon wire - in this state, the next run-over of an obstacle or a slab joint can lead to the instant breakage of one or several turns.

Operating the unit with a broken or critically sagged spring is not permitted, as it inevitably causes misalignment of the movable axle in the yoke slots, uneven weight distribution of the machine, and rapid destruction of the wheel hub bearings due to working under bending stress.

The main engineering rule when servicing this assembly is that the springs ZP 01.603 are always replaced exclusively as a pair. Even if only one part is visually or mechanically damaged, installing a new rigid spring paired with an old tired part is guaranteed to create a resistance imbalance. The side with the new spring will be higher and more rigid, which will immediately lead to axle misalignment and negate the entire efficiency of the contour-following system. During replacement, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the yoke slots and check the condition of all adjacent parts - metal support plates, the axle itself, and the corresponding fasteners of the assembly.

Practical Experience Associated with the Front Travel Springs

Despite the fact that the spring contour-following system is a classic factory standard, in practice the ZP 01.603 parts often become a real headache for mechanics. The main reason lies in the openness of the assembly - in real threshing floor conditions, the inter-turn space of the spring quickly gets clogged with a mixture of grain dust, chaff, and moisture, and over time this mass presses into a stone-like state, completely blocking the working travel of the part. Add to this the inevitable corrosion of open metal elements - and the assembly jams dead or breaks down, usually on one of the sides, which causes axle misalignment, wheel warping, and the destruction of bushings or the hub.

Knowing how much time and nerves it takes to knock out rusted springs from the slots during repair, many farms resort to forced modernization - they simply throw away the problematic springs along with the bolts, allowing the axle to rigidly rest directly on the yoke. This solves the misalignment problem but deprives the massive frame of the unit of any shock absorption, which basically corresponds to the concept of modern rigid front yokes, which are designed from the very beginning as a monolithic, springless assembly.

Understanding this systemic problem, our engineers took the path of evolution and developed a completely new two-wheel front travel, which we install on our ZM-60U/90U models. In this modern assembly, we completely abandoned the use of problematic vertical springs - instead, smooth contour-following and ideal weight distribution are provided by a reliable pendulum system (balancer). This assembly is practically maintenance-free, is not afraid of dirt, and permanently closes the issue of suspension jamming.

Thus, if you are tired of the constant struggle with cleaning and replacing spring mechanisms, or have abandoned them, but the problem of surface contour-following remains relevant to you, you have the opportunity to take a step forward by replacing the old assembly with a fail-safe modern system.

Buy the Spring ZP 01.603 for ZM-60 at the Zavod Moroza

Be that as it may, the classic suspension system has been proven over decades, and many farms consciously remain loyal to the original factory design. If you use or have decided to restore the classic contour-following mechanism, the Zavod Moroza offers high-quality springs ZP 01.603 made of special carbon wire with strict adherence to the required degree of rigidity and turn pitch. We remind you once again that the main rule of servicing this assembly is that the front travel springs are replaced exclusively in pairs (as a set of 2 pcs) to avoid rigidity imbalance and misalignment of the movable axle. And for a comprehensive repair without unnecessary hassle, you can immediately order from us all the necessary accompanying spare parts - new bolts (ZP 01.602), metal support plates (ZP 01.403), the axle itself (ZP 01.601), or the entire front travel assembly (ZP 01.020).

Contact our specialists to place an order. We will promptly dispatch a set of reliable parts for a classic repair or consult you in detail on switching to the modern two-wheel travel, leaving the final choice of the maintenance format up to you.
