Auger Segments Ø 350 mm with 4 mm Thickness

The movement of heavy, wet, or dense industrial raw materials, such as cement, coal, ash, or fuel pellets, creates significant mechanical loads on the working parts of a conveyor. In such aggressive operating conditions, reinforced auger segments with a diameter of 350 mm and a metal thickness of 4 mm serve as the basic standard of reliability. Although our production facilities allow for the formation of flights of any other diameters with thicknesses of 3, 4, 6, 8, and even 16 mm, the 4 mm profile for the 350 mm size represents the transition boundary to industrial-class equipment. This safety margin of metal in the auger segments is necessary for stable system operation under the constant pressure of large volumes of heavy mass.

The transition from a standard lightweight 3 mm construction to a reinforced one is dictated by a significant change in the physics of the transportation process itself. While an auger primarily moves volume when working with agricultural crops, the transshipment of dense industrial raw materials requires continuous overcoming of high frontal resistance. Under these conditions, the auger segments take on the rigid back-pressure of the mass, which only thick-plate metal can withstand without bending or deformation.

Counteracting Axial Deformation of Reinforced Auger Segments

The surface area of a single flight at a diameter of 350 mm is quite substantial, and when such a wide working organ captures and moves dense, heavy, or viscous mass, high frontal material resistance acts upon its plane. This resistance is rarely stable, as the load increases sharply during the startup of a filled conveyor or when a wetter or denser portion of raw material enters, creating strong mechanical pressure on each metal plane.

If auger segments with insufficient metal thickness are used in such conditions, the structure simply cannot withstand the counter-pressure-under the weight of industrial raw materials, the thin profile begins to act like a spring, where the outer part of the blade bends backward away from the direction of movement. Such axial deformation instantly disrupts the specified flow geometry, and instead of moving forward freely, the material begins to stall, compact, and press between the flights, which can quickly lead to the jamming of the entire line.

The use of 4 mm or thicker steel in auger segments is an effective engineering solution to counteract this effect. Such rolled steel provides the level of spatial rigidity necessary for stable unit operation, ensuring that even under peak loads, the metal profile does not succumb to deformation and strictly maintains the specified spiral pitch. As a result, the working organ confidently shears and pushes the heavy mass, maintaining uninterrupted transportation without the risk of the blades bending backward.

Abrasive Wear Resistance of Reinforced Auger Segments

Transportation of materials such as fuel ash, coal dust, sand, or raw materials with mineral impurities is inevitably accompanied by constant intensive friction. Unlike smooth agricultural crops, these substances act as a powerful abrasive on the steel surface during movement, where every revolution of the central shaft in such an aggressive environment gradually removes a micro-layer of metal, eventually leading to the unavoidable wear of the conveyor's working organ.

In these conditions, the initial thickness of the profile becomes a decisive factor in the system's longevity. The use of 4 mm steel creates an additional operational margin of working material compared to the standard 3 mm version. This extra volume of metal significantly delays the moment when the blade thins to a critical state and loses its ability to capture raw materials. Consequently, the enterprise gains a much longer maintenance interval for the line, minimizing the number of technological stops for replacing worn auger segments.

Advantages of Our Auger Segment Manufacturing Method

Mass production of auger spirals is predominantly based on the cold rolling technology of a continuous steel strip; to make a straight strip twist, rolling rollers mechanically stretch its outer edge. Due to this specific forming process, the profile thickness is distributed extremely unevenly-while it is the declared 4 mm at the supporting shaft, the metal thins by almost half at the outer edge. During the movement of industrial raw materials, it is precisely the outer radius of the flight that takes on the main resistance of the mass and the greatest abrasive friction; a part thinned in this zone wears out quickly, losing its ability to effectively capture material.

Zavod Moroza uses a different approach-production by the method of step-by-step spatial forming (bending). First, a flat ring blank with fixed diameters is cut, and then we locally bend the part on a hydraulic press, setting the required spiral pitch. Since the metal is not subjected to aggressive stretching by rolling rollers, each segment retains its original 4 mm thickness across its entire plane. This method of manufacturing auger segments guarantees maximum mechanical endurance of the vital outer zone of the blade and directly affects the stability of conveyor operation under load.

Engineering Support from the Manufacturer

Zavod Moroza constantly utilizes the reinforced 4 mm profile of auger segments when designing and assembling its own industrial conveyors. Practical experience working with heavy raw materials gives us a clear understanding of the metal's operational lifespan under constant load. In addition to manufacturing parts, our design department assists enterprises in solving complex technological tasks, and the plant's engineers-who are thoroughly versed in the technical capabilities of production and the specifics of industrial and elevator lines-can design non-standard units, perform precise performance calculations, or propose an effective modernization plan for your equipment.

Since auger segments sized 350x4 mm are a base standard for harsh operating conditions and are consistently required by many enterprises to maintain uninterrupted line operation, we ensure their continuous serial production. Understanding this constant market need, we have set up the cycle to promptly assemble and ship batches of the required volume without long waiting periods.
