Front Travel Axle ZM-60 (ZP 01.601)

The front travel axle ZP 01.601 is a key load-bearing element of the classic front travel system of the ZM-60/60A grain loaders and their modifications. Unlike standard rigid axles, this part performs a complex dual function - it serves as a seating base for the wheel assembly and also acts as an active movable component of the unit's suspension. With its ends, the axle enters the vertical guide slots of the outer yoke ZP 01.050, where it interacts with support plates, special bolts, and springs - such a kinematic scheme allows the axle to have relatively free vertical travel. While moving the machine across the threshing floor area, the axle is the first to take on shock loads from running over the joints of concrete slabs or small stones, transmitting this force to the springs, which ensures contour-following and constant contact of the wheel with the surface - this also protects the assemblies and the massive load-bearing frame of the grain loader from destructive torsional deformations.

Design Features and Technical Specifications of the Axle ZP 01.601

  • Catalogue number: ZP 01.601
  • Material: High-quality structural carbon steel (Steel 45)
  • Part type: Front suspension support axle
  • Quantity per unit: 1 pc.
  • Country of manufacture: Ukraine

Structurally, the part is a solid metal shaft specially designed to operate under constant dynamic loads. Since this axle is simultaneously a load-bearing base for the wheels and a movable element absorbing shocks, a robust steel grade (Steel 45) is used for its manufacture - this ensures high resistance of the part to bending and shear deformations even during harsh run-overs of obstacles by the massive grain loader. The end parts of the axle have a specific geometry designed for free sliding in the vertical slots of the front yoke. Special technological holes are provided on these ends for connection with the guide bolts ZP 01.602, and through the system of support plates ZP 01.403, the axle transmits the vertical impulse from the wheel directly to the springs ZP 01.603 for a shock-absorbing effect. The central part of the shaft, meanwhile, has a smooth, geometrically precise surface, which serves as an ideal seating base for the bearings or bushings of the hub ZPT 1007, ensuring uniform rotation of the wheels without misalignments.

Features of Repair, Replacement, and Modifications Associated with the Axle ZP 01.601

The main cause of failure of the axle ZP 01.601 is metal fatigue and mechanical deformations. Despite the strength of Steel 45, regular harsh run-overs of obstacles can eventually lead to bending of the shaft imperceptible to the eye. In addition, the specifics of working in the vertical slots of the yoke cause constant friction at the ends of the axle, and in the highly dusty conditions of the threshing floor, where grain dust acts as an abrasive, these end sections gradually wear out, leading to the appearance of play and wheel misalignment. Another common problem is the weakening of the central part of the axle in the seating locations of the bushings, which happens due to their untimely replacement or operation with a battered hub.

Attempts to repair a worn axle or manufacture it in a farm workshop extremely rarely yield a perfect result. Even a minimal geometric deviation after such a repair will cause the hub bushings to work under bending stress and fail quite quickly, therefore the only technically correct solution is to replace the axle with a new factory one. During replacement, it is mandatory to inspect the associated suspension parts - check the condition of the guide bolts, the integrity of the support plates, springs, and the hub.

Although the classic spring suspension with the axle ZP 01.601 successfully operates on thousands of units today, modern engineering trends and the practical experience of farms prompt the evolutionary simplification of this assembly for the sake of maximum reliability. Because open springs and slots require periodic cleaning and inspection, many farms are abandoning contour-following in favor of modern rigid front yokes without shock absorption. In practice, this classic mechanism often turns out to be the "weak link" of the undercarriage. A design where one central wheel rests on two independent side springs has a significant drawback - the risk of uneven pressure distribution. When one of the springs sags, breaks, or its travel is simply blocked by compacted dirt, the axle becomes misaligned. This leads to the wheel tilting during movement, which in turn creates a bending load on the bearings and destroys the hub. Moreover, due to operating in an aggressive environment, disassembling rusted guide bolts and springs turns into a real ordeal for a mechanic, and this is exactly why during the first such repair, agrarians often make a radical and completely justified decision - they completely remove the problematic springs with their fasteners, allowing the axle to rigidly rest directly on the lower part of the inner yoke.

Thus, during major maintenance of the equipment, you have a choice - to fully restore the classic soft suspension by purchasing a new high-quality axle ZP 01.601, or to modernize the front travel by simplifying the existing system or even switching to a modern front travel assembly of a new design.

The modern two-wheel front travel ZM-60U of our production represents a radically different level of unit stability; thanks to the double footprint area, the specific load on the wheelset is significantly reduced, which ensures ease of control, high maneuverability, and smoothness of travel during turns of the heavy machine on the threshing floor – and at the same time, the pendulum balancer system works out the unevenness of the threshing floor without any springs. Interestingly, at the core of this deep modernization, most of the classic parts were preserved, as well as our familiar axle ZP 01.601 - in the new assembly, it performs the function of a central oscillation hinge, proving that time-tested reliable parts can serve as an excellent base for significant technological improvement.

Buy the Axle ZP 01.601 at the Moroz Plant

A functional axle is a guarantee of the correct geometry of the undercarriage and the durability of the hub bearings. The Moroz Plant manufactures ZP 01.601 axles from robust structural steel with strict adherence to all seating tolerances and the geometry of the end sections, which guarantees the perfect fit of the part into the yoke slots and the reliable operation of both the classic and modernized front travel even under the highest loads of an open threshing floor.

We understand that every farm has its own approach to equipment repair, therefore we offer flexible solutions. From us, you can purchase either a separate axle ZP 01.601 to restore a classic assembly or order the necessary associated suspension parts (guide bolts, plates, springs), and if you decide to abandon the old system, we are ready to offer you a fully equipped modern two-wheel front travel.

Contact our technical specialists to place an order. We will analyze your needs, help you choose the optimal option for restoration or modernization, and promptly dispatch the parts that will return stability, ease of control, and confident travel to your grain loader.
