Trimmer Brake Band ZP 01.240 for ZM-60/60A

The ZP 01.240 brake band is the main flexible friction element of the ZP 01.140 normally closed band brake, which comes standard on classic ZM-60 and ZM-60A series grain loaders. Its primary engineering task is to make direct physical contact with the cylindrical part (drum) of the trimmer's pivoting frame to ensure its reliable locking in a set operating position.

Structurally, the part is a curved steel strip whose geometry is designed for a tight wrap around the drum. A special eyelet is formed on one movable end of the band, which pivotally mounts onto the eccentric pin of the ZP 01.150 control lever. The opposite end of the band ends with a rigidly welded long threaded pin (shank). This pin passes through a stationary stop bracket on the unit's supporting frame and is secured with M12 adjusting nuts.

In the operating (normally closed) state, under the force of the spring, the lever pulls the band by the eyelet, causing it to clamp the drum and block the trimmer from spontaneous turning under the influence of vibrations or grain recoil. The threaded shank on the other end of the band does not participate in dynamic unbraking, but plays an important role in the basic adjustment of the assembly—it is using these nuts that the operator compensates for operational metal stretching and sets the correct operating clearance. According to technical requirements, in the fully unbraked state, the gap between the band and the drum along the entire perimeter must be strictly 1-1.5 mm.

The durability of the brake band directly depends on its correct initial adjustment. According to the technical requirements for operating classic units, in the fully unbraked state (when the handle is pulled to the right and locked), the clearance between the inner plane of the band and the cylindrical drum of the pivoting frame must be strictly 1-1.5 mm along the entire perimeter—this adjustment is performed exclusively using the two nuts on the blind threaded shank. If the clearance is smaller (nuts over-tightened), the band will not release the drum completely and will constantly rub against it during trimmer turns, leading to rapid metal wear. If the clearance is too large (shank released too much), the working stroke of the eccentric and the force of the spring will simply not be enough to tightly compress the drum, and the massive trimmer structure will begin to spontaneously turn under the impact of the grain flow recoil.

Since the ZP 01.240 band is made of steel strip and acts as a friction brake, its natural wear occurs quite slowly—provided it works only in static mode (holding an already locked assembly). However, in practice, the part often fails prematurely due to the human factor. The greatest damage to the band is caused by forcing the trimmer to turn when the operator does not fully engage the lever, overcoming the resistance of a semi-clamped brake—in this mode, the metal of the band thins intensively, stretches, and loses its ability to reliably wrap around the drum.

Another vulnerable zone is the movable eyelet of the band, which fits onto the eccentric pin of the ZP 01.150 lever. Due to the lack of lubrication in this open movable joint and the constant vibrations of the unit, the round hole of the eyelet gradually wears out and acquires an oval shape. The formation of such a parasitic ellipse leads to the fact that during unbraking, the lever first idly takes up this backlash on the axis, and only then begins to push the band itself forward. This significantly reduces the actual un-clamping stroke, making the trimmer control process imprecise and heavy.

The vulnerability of the classic system was that the band was only a passive actuating element pulled by a complex and capricious structure consisting of the ZP 01.160 rod, spring, and spherical washer. The slightest misalignment of the rod in the frame hole led to the band not receiving the required tension force or, conversely, not releasing the drum. Analyzing these structural shortcomings, on new grain loaders (ZM-60U, ZM-90U, ZM-120U) we cardinally changed the geometry of the brake band itself. In our modernized versions ZP 01.241 and ZP 01.242, we abandoned the short threaded shank in favor of a long and straight guide rod, which is an integral part of the band itself. Now the working ZP 01.612 spring is placed directly onto this extended shank of the band. Thanks to this solution, the band itself has become a full-fledged power assembly—the spring provides a direct, ideally linear tension of the steel strip without any intermediate rods and misalignments. Spherical washers and retaining rings have permanently disappeared from the kinematic scheme, and the control handle now performs exclusively the function of un-clamping. This modernization has made the trimmer locking mechanism more reliable, and the process of setting up or replacing the band as simple and intuitive as possible for the operator.
