The ZP 01.140 band brake assembly is a specialized locking control unit that comes standard on classic ZM-60 and ZM-60A series grain loaders. The mechanism is mounted directly onto the load-bearing plate of the unit's main frame and performs a single engineering task: reliably holding and locking the trimmer's pivoting frame in any set operating position.
By operating principle, this unit is a normally closed band brake. This means that by default, the mechanism is always in a clamped (braked) state due to the force of a powerful spring that constantly presses against the lever system. The brake band tightly wraps around the cylindrical part (drum) of the trimmer's pivoting frame, locking it securely and preventing spontaneous rotation of the unit under the influence of operational vibrations or recoil during grain discharge.
The unbraking process to change the grain discharge direction is implemented via an eccentric lever. To turn the trimmer, the operator moves the brake handle to the right - during this movement, the spring's resistance is overcome, the eccentric brings the ends of the band closer together, and the band loosens its grip on the drum. The lever kinematics are specially calculated so that when fully pulled to the right, it passes through a "dead center" into a rigid lock in the open state - this allows the operator not to waste strength holding a stiff spring, but instead freely turn the massive trimmer with both hands to the desired angle. After setting the required direction, the handle is simply released from the lock back, and the spring returns it to its original position, clamping the drum once again.
To ensure proper and efficient operation of the assembly, provisions are made to compensate for band stretching. Basic adjustment is carried out using adjusting nuts on the blind end of the band - according to factory requirements, in the fully unbraked state, the clearance between the band and the pivoting frame drum along the entire perimeter must be exactly 1–1.5 mm.

The reliability of the semi-automatic brake largely depends on the small parts of the rod system. Because the ZP 01.150 brake lever moves along an arc when shifted, the ZP 01.160 rod attached to it constantly changes its angle of inclination relative to the hole in the stationary frame. To compensate for this misalignment, a special ZP 01.608 washer (made of Steel 45) is mandatory installed on the rod in front of the spring. It operates on a hinge principle, allowing the rod to smoothly change angle while resting against the edge of the hole. If this part is lost during a makeshift repair or replaced with a regular flat washer, the rod will start binding hard in the frame hole, bend, and the unbraking mechanism may jam. At the very end of the rod, there is only a small retaining ring, which bears no load and serves solely to prevent the rod from falling out of the frame during complete disassembly.
Despite being a friction mechanism, the brake has a mandatory lubrication point. The main rotation axis of the eccentric lever is equipped with a grease fitting. Factory maintenance schedules require regular greasing of this unit with solid grease (solidol) twice a season - ignoring this rule leads to the lever seizing on the axis. If the axis runs dry, the operator has to apply excessive force to unbrake the trimmer, and worse yet, the ZP 01.612 spring may simply fail to return the seized lever to its original position, causing the ZP 01.240 band not to clamp the drum with sufficient force, and the trimmer may begin to turn spontaneously during grain discharge.
The brake band ZP 01.240 itself is designed for a long service life, as under normal conditions it operates only in static mode (holding an already stationary trimmer). Accelerated wear and metal scraping of the band are most often caused by errors such as the absence of the basic 1–1.5 mm clearance and the human factor. If the nuts on the blind end of the band are over-tightened, it never releases the drum completely and constantly rubs against it during turns. Or when the operator turns the massive trimmer without bringing the handle to its full lock, forcibly overcoming the resistance of a semi-clamped brake - in such cases, the band stretches rapidly and thins out, usually requiring a complete replacement of the assembly.

Band Brake Modernization on New Grain Loaders by Zavod Moroza
As seen from the classic specification, the old mechanism consists of a whole series of small parts that formed a separate spring-loaded unit pressing on the lever. The main engineering flaw of such kinematics was that when turning the handle, the rod constantly changed its angle relative to the hole in the frame, and if the ZP 01.608 spherical washer wore out slightly or got lost during repairs, the rod would scrape hard against the edges of the hole, jam, bend, and cause the mechanism to seize. In addition, the retaining ring on the end of the rod often flew off from vibrations, and this entire structure could fall apart right on the threshing floor during operation.
On new units from Zavod Moroza (ZM-60U, ZM-90U, ZM-120U), we revised this kinematics, making it significantly more reliable and simpler. After analyzing new drawings and practical experience, we implemented the following changes:
- Direct spring action (without rod and washers)
We completely abandoned the separate awkward rod (ZP 01.160), the capricious spherical washer, and the retaining rings. Instead, the spring (ZP 01.612.000) is now installed directly onto the elongated straight shank of the brake band itself (ZP 01.241). This shank passes through a stationary stop bracket on the frame, and the spring is simply pressed by a nut with a washer at the very end of the band. - Change in handle operation logic
By relocating the spring to the band shank, the spring now provides direct linear tension. It constantly pulls the shank toward itself, securely squeezing the band around the pivoting frame drum. The brake handle (ZP 01.150) in this layout acts exclusively as an un-clamping eccentric - when the operator pulls the handle, it simply feeds the front end of the band forward (toward the drum), creating the necessary slack to turn the trimmer.
This modification eliminated all the "chronic illnesses" of the unit - now the spring force acts strictly along a straight line of the band shank axis because there are no angle changes, nothing binds or bends. The mechanism has become completely fail-safe, the number of parts has decreased, and adjusting the brake clamping force now boils down to the elementary tightening of a single nut directly on the band shank. Moreover, this concept of direct and reliable locking has proven itself so well on the trimmer that we scaled it up - on our new machines, a similar band brake principle (with a metal rim on the sprocket) successfully replaced the outdated and unreliable ratchet stop in the forward travel control system.
